CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF EDWARD SEMBAJJWE: FOR EDWARD SEMBAJJWE, DISABILITY HAS NOT BEEN INABILITY.

Sunday, April 16, 2023 Edward Sembajjwe formerly a Councillor for the those living with Disabilities at Kajjansi Town Council and a Carpenter by profession passed on in the evening at Mulago National Referral Hospital after battling respiratory related problems. Deepest condolences to Edward’s siblings and children as well as grandchildren. He will be buried Tuesday, April 18 at Buswa in Kajjansi Town Council - Wakiso District.

May his Soul Rest In Peace.

Edward has been an artisan whose innovations gave him contacts locally with among others National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and internationally where innovations in Solar Stoves made him travel to share his experiences.

Edward in January 2017 attended the 6th SCI World Conference when he came back, he addressed relatives and friends after arrival from India. His experiences made many admire him.

Sembajjwe was the brain behind Disabled Technicians Uganda who were involved in among other innovations making Solar Stoves.

TESTIMONY

In a country where Disabled Technicians Uganda Limited has long and increasing successfully experience in promoting cleaner safer, more efficient and affordable cooking stoves, workshops took place to facilitate exchange among solar cookers practitioners on enhancing local value chains. The working group on solar cookers of the Disabled Technicians Uganda Limited energy network sector in Uganda invited disabled colleagues and other practitioners in the solar cooker sector from all over Wakiso District in Uganda in order to discuss different solar cookers production systems and professionalization of solar cooker adoption, models of semi-industrial production, new technologies and testing requirements, different approaches to support individual producers, sustainability, standardization and monitoring.

A week later the solar cooker camp in Kiira Town invited members of the Disabled Technicians Uganda, National Solar Cooker Network with Solar Cooker practitioners from other District to join the association. Participants received practical training and comprehensive information on safety, emissions and solar cooker testing protocols. The camp furthermore facilitated in-depth discussions on issues of value chain promotion and monitoring, Presentations and field visits; demonstrated state of the solar cooker production. Local NGOs compiled reports on the distribution and marking of different models of solar cookers and selling to supermarkets.

In June 2015 National Environment Management Authority Uganda (NEMA) Invited Disabled Technicians Uganda Limited to participate as an Exhibitor at the World Environment Day on the 5th of June. At Sacred Heart Kiterede Senior Secondary School Kyotera, Town Council Rakai District as you may be aware 5th June of every year is World Environment day (WED) the main objective of celebrating (WED) is to promote public awareness and action for sustainable use and management of our environment. Through these celebrations, we reaffirm our commitments to sustainable environment management (WED) therefore each one of us is provided with an opportunity to curry out activities that address specific environmental problems and issue within our localities.

World Environment Day is always celebrated under one global theme provided by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Disabled Technicians Uganda Limited an Organized group of disabled Ugandans who have become innovative to prove to their nation that disability is not inability. The association has a vast experience in energy saving technologies such as Energy saving stoves and solar cookers.

They use cost effective and locally available materials to make these energy efficient equipment. The association has always participated in exhibitions of NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY (NEMA) Uganda, during world environment day cerebrations over time to time this has helped raise awareness on efficient energy use and the need to reduce the current high deforestation in the country and we have been rewarded certificates from them (NEMA). This is therefore to request you as International Solar Promoter for any possible technician information / materials to support for the furtherance of these important initiatives.

June 2017: World Environment Day celebration - Edward Sembajjwe of Disabled Technicians Uganda Limited built and demonstrated the Heliac Solar Cooker at the 5 June 2017 national World Environment Day celebration in Ibanda, Western Uganda. This partnership formed at the 6th SCI World Conference 2017 at Muni Seva Ashram in Gujarat, January 2017. With materials and instructions from Heliac, Sembajjwe and Disabled Technicians Uganda manufactured the Heliac Fresnel-lens solar cooker locally.

March 2017: The group reports that it has started to construct the Heliac Solar Cooker, a design from Denmark.

TESTIMONY ABOUT SOLAR COOKER ORDERS:

Women First Places Order for 20 Solar Cookers

As Disabled Technicians (U) Ltd worked on the plan for the year 2011, a surprise phone call was received from WomenFirst Organization’s Director Mrs Damalie Sempa. This organization is found in Kamuli District of Eastern Uganda. They placed an order for 20 pcs of Solar Cookers. This was in the month of November 2010 and they have already got the Solar Cookers they ordered. We were told that after getting funding from a Swedish based Organization to make Solar Cookers so as to deliver the same to 20 Sub-groups to effect training of women members on how to make Solar Cookers and use them for among other purposes baking; they proceeded to go to the Internet to search for the local manufacturers of Solar Oven Cooker Boxes. They eventually got our contact and were able to ring us before physically getting in touch with us to seal the deal.

We proceeded to make the Solar Oven Cooker Boxes and have already delivered the order. We have discovered that given the escalating cost of Electric Power, and the requirement to fight environmental degradation, there is increasing demand to harness Solar as source of power to aid the cooking. Given this challenge, the Disabled Technicians (U) Ltd Director Edward Sembajjwe would like the Organization to concentrate on training various groups throughout the country and publisize the Solar Cookers so that as awareness is increased there will be a big boost in the effective demand for the Cookers and with time, the environment degradation will be checked.

The Challenge of Disabled Technicians Uganda Ltd is to get the capacity to implement the Prospect Work Plan for 2011. It is for this reason that we appeal to Solar Cooker International Director of International Program Development to incorporate us into the organization’s programs, that way; we shall be boosted and shall effectively undertake training locally as well as avail Solar Cookers to the Uganda Market. It is true the increasing population in Uganda is pressing hard on the environment and forests are one of the areas that are being degraded at a very fast rate, the reason being that only a small percentage of the population can afford to use Electric Power for Cooking purposes, and the majority resort to firewood and charcoal. Our intervention is absolutely important and so far, on ground the climate is changing because of among other things man’s intervention in harnessing the forests and in a number of instances clearing the forest cover eventually for agriculture.

MY STATEMENT TO THOSE WHO SEE THEMSELVES ENTITLED TO DO INJUSTICE TO US COMMERCIAL BANKERS INCLUSIVE AS UGANDA MOURNS KEITH.

There is the tradition of always talking good of dead people. However, if we are to get Uganda back to the course of morality by those in Government offices and parastatals to mention some, we have to stand firm and expose some of these people.

I am a victim of people like the Late Governor Bank of Uganda - Prof. Emmanuel Musiime Mutebile and Keith Muhakanizi to mention some following my fundraising (s) since 2010.

I must say: “Though I toiled, used my brain to get money to Uganda from 2010, through 2015 to mention some of my fundraising dates, to these guys I remained rubbish, not worthy anybody’s attention, and only God knows who have benefitted from my fundraising (s).

Uganda has graduated to a rank where some people like bankers are shameless. While I raised billions equivalent in Uganda shillings, some banker in the then Cairo International bank told me how they had not received money for my Presidential bid! This is not the truth. One just needs to use common sense. We have lost people in US and UK and relatives ended up using ‘gofundme’ and I am not aware of any such attempt that failed to raise the required monies to bring home the dead. And, for any person with brains, a person runs two different fundraising (s) for President: 2010 & 2015, and you say in both cases he raised no money, yet this was before COVID - 19? One saying such is surely a candidate for Butabika.

I see praises for technocrats who have played a leading role in seeing my money diverted, and surely, it is only God Who is just. But incidently, they are praised for having excelled in their duties!

I thank God that though billions equivalent of shillings I raised to Uganda were shared by the connected, God has never left my side. As all the monies have been taken, He got a Good Samaritan who donated to me a relatively decent small house with balance of the plot where I am able to do my gardening. With the monies I have got into Uganda, I have to use a taxi. When I get sick, I have to reach out to some people to provide money to help finance my sickness!

If you are party to a scheme that has condemned me to what I am going through, just know, God does not have much time for you.

Ephesians 5:15 - 17

15 “Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is”.

You would be deceiving yourself to imagine that you can have long life after putting me through the type of suffering I am enduring. Your actions simply lead to your early departure. God has always had a solution to people who end up as nuisance. Surely you cannot be behind a scheme to deny someone what is rightfully due to him or her simply because you are able to interfere with his communication hence cut off those informing him of funds sent.

Let us be just to one another. You will take what is due to me, and God Will not give you chance to enjoy the loot. Out of the blue you will get a multi organ failure, die in an accident or even not wake up in your sleep.

I no longer have sleepless nights as regards people who have stolen my money or played roles in ensuring that I don’t get a coin, for God soon or later will cut their plans short.

For those who are still in the practice of stealing funds due to others or denying them funds without following the law, yes know your time on earth will be shortened as you become a nuisance in society.

5. Namutamba Parish Local Economic Development Model.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE NAMUTAMBA PARISH WOULD BE NOW?

If only some people had not shared the monies I received in my fundraising appeals for President in 2010 and 2015, Namutamba Parish where I grew up would be a Centre of Excellence.

1. Namutamba Demonstration School would already be back to one of the leading schools in Uganda.

2. Namutamba would be popular for growing Organic food.

3. Namutamba would be getting local and foreign tourists in hundreds every week.

4. Namutamba cattle farmers would slowly be changing from having large herds to small zero grazing cattle with high returns.

5. Namutamba would be having tarmac roads linking many places.

6. Namutamba motorists would be having a reliable fuel station in the area.

7. Residents of Namutamba and its hinterland would no longer have to go to Mityana for their shopping, they would get 95% of their needs in Namutamba.

8. There would be extension agents virtually in all villages of Namutamba and organized marketing channels of the agricultural produce.

9. Namutamba Parish would boost of a Healthy Centre IV and expanding with services including: Ambulances; Surgery; Maternity; Eye-care; Dental and Primary Healthcare Services to mention some.

10. There would be at least one Demonstration Farm in each of the village of Namutamba Parish.

11. We would have a sports playground with prospects of being very competitive in Uganda.

12. We would try as much as possible to get people to work and change their wasted time in unproductive politics of parties to income generation.

13. We would by now be supporting Religious Organizations in their roles to promote morality which is the greatest problem of Uganda.

14. We would be sponsoring youth to train in vocational skills where such training is available and these would come back to Namutamba to boost the local economic development.

You cannot believe, this plan has not taken off. It is now 12 years simply because of the moral decay, impunity and love for free things by those who are connected.

Some of us have practical ideas and means to execute them, but we have people who think that they know a lot. Others use all sorts of unviable reasons to take what is due to the likes of myself.

We are poor because we have some people with primitive thinking. Those who undertake primitive accumulation of wealth.

If only God can intervene and I recover funds that were stolen by the so - called connected people, I can assure you, Namutamba Parish will turn into the Mecca of Uganda.

SMACK OLD BOY JOACHIM BUWEMBO (1973 - 1978) WAS APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF UPPC BOARD WHICH HAS BEEN INAUGURATED ON THURSDAY, APRIL 13.

Congratulations.

Veteran journalist Joachim Buwembo has been named board chairman of the Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation, Minister for the Presidency Babirye Milly Babalanda inaugurated the Board on Thursday, April 13.

UPPC Board members include: Buwembo, Sadat Kisuyi, Jolly Kamugira Kaguhangire, Alice N. K. Muhoozi, Andrew Kibaya, Hellen Icumar Judith, Jimmy Karugaba and Nooh Bukenya.

The eight have been sworn in as board members of the Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) in a ceremony officiated by the Minister for Presidency, Milly Babalanda. Mr Joachim Buwembo has been appointed as the Board chairperson.

Joachim Buwembo is a seasoned journalist for the East African and The Sunday Vision in Uganda, and a keen observer of Ugandan society.

In the Courtroom of Lord J. C. Kiwanuka.

The term was long, the food was bad and morale was down. The second half of 1977 was tense and the students needed a spark to exploit the situation to go home. But the spark was not forthcoming. In the end, we just refused to go to class citing a number of vague grievances, which we demanded to be addressed by the administration. On the afternoon of the second day of our sit- down strike, a senior official from the Ministry of Education came to address us. I just remember his surname – Mugerwa. We assembled before the Headmaster‘s office to listen to the Government man. After going on and on about discipline while we grumbled, mumbled and jeered, the man abruptly said without warning, ―I now declare St. Mary‘s College Kisubi closed.‖ A hush fell over the crowd. As if on signal, several Military Police (MP) guys armed with Uzi guns, surrounded the student body. They had been patrolling the compound for a day or so and we had learnt to ignore them. But now they looked so menacing as if they were ready to use their weapons on us. Somebody tried to ask for clarification and was abruptly shut down by an order from one MP who barked, ―Funga mudomo.

We were given one hour to collect all our personal effects, surrender school property and clear off the campus. Suddenly, it was every man for himself. All individuals looked scared and the collective bravado that had reigned days before was all gone. We had wanted to go home and now that they were sending us there, we were scared. Within two hours, we had cleared off the compound. One hour would not have been enough to hand in all textbooks to different departments and get signatures to the effect. Tons of luggage covered the lawns of Mt. St. Teresa where hundreds of students waited to be picked up.

There was a long queue at the telephone booth down the Post Office at the main road. Many students were jumping onto taxis for the city, after depositing their property with friends around. Those days, there was a lot of interaction with the neighbouring communities.

After about a month, we were invited back – all of us except the senior prefects then in S.5. All the senior prefects were expelled except Enoch Biriggwa, the Kakooza House Prefect. Enoch was a star National Sprinter, the only one the school didn‘t want to lose. (After S.6, he took a Sports Scholarship to the U S where he eventually became a banker and just returned home in June 2002)

On day one after our return, the ― executions began. Never before had a student of St. Mary‘s been caned. In fact the teachers did not know how to cane and they considered such an exercise beneath their dignity. We then did not understand why it had to be done but now it appears to me that the Military Government of the day had to be convinced that serious action was being taken, otherwise the state could have sought to sort our problems their own way.

Since the teachers did not know how to handle the cane, policemen from Entebbe had to be hired to carry out the grim exercise. They put on civilian clothes and the Deputy Headmaster who was also head of the Mathematics department and patron of the Higher School, Mr. J.C. Kiwanuka, was in charge.

Even then, he was comical, but the canes were real. JC was at the same time Prosecutor, Defence witness and Judge.

―Sserubuga Charles, JC called out. The lanky, dark History student stepped forward and JC proceeded to read the charges. ― During the crisis, you were overheard saying that, ― we should force these people to give us a holiday, six lashes. The argumentative Sserubuga started to say,

― I do not accept the charges... But he could not finish. The Policemen grabbed him, shoved him to the floor and proceeded to administer the lashes.

HOW WILL YOU LOOK AT ME IN AFTERLIFE WHEN YOU WERE ONE OF THE BENEFICIARIES OF THE PROCEEDS OF MY FUNDRAISING (S) AND YOU ARE PROPERTYLESS THEN?
