MAKERERE UNIVERSITY COUNCIL SHOULD DO THINGS RIGHT.

MAKERERE UNIVERSITY COUNCIL SHOULD DO THINGS RIGHT.

We are having problems in this country Uganda partly because some people break the rules. According to a previous advertisement for the position of Vice Chancellor, it is clearly stipulated that the candidate should be 40 - 60 years of age. There is no way the University Council can overlook that requirement and instead they resolve to re - knew the contract of Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe however much he may have excelled in his 5 year term. Available information indicates that Nawangwe was born in January 1956. As of now, he is 66 years and CANNOT qualify to be appointed Vice Chancellor when he exceeds the required age.

In 2020, the whole world was shocked when the Ivory Tower was burnt. This building was completed in 1941, and during Nawangwe’s time, Government has had to raise shs 21bn to have it reconstructed, and at the pick of the celebrations for Makerere University Centenary, there will be no Main building.

More often than not, investigations in Uganda for such fires remain in speculation. The people who set such fires may at times be induced by the failures in administration in some areas. In order to rule out the possibility of some people reacting which could involve the burning of another building, the correct thing to do is to show Nawangwe the exit and give chance for the selection of a candidate in line with the existing guidelines.
