The NRM parliamentary caucus has proposed that President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the NRM party chairman, stands unopposed for the party presidency in 2016.
The proposal was made by Northern Youth MP Evelyn Anite and was supported by the entire caucus members during a luncheon held at the Rwamasindi Abasonga Presidential farm in Ngoma, Nakaseke district.
The MPs said in their proposal that they realized the role President Museveni has played in ensuring peace, security, democracy and social economic transformation among other things, urging him to stand Unopposed in 2016. They pledged their total support.
"This proposal is out of coordination among members. It is not out of emotions or excitement but focus" Hon. Oundo Nekesa said amidst chanting NRM slogans and clapping.
The president didn't respond to the proposal raised by the MPs and instead invited them to tour the farm.
The president who gave a rich history of the war in Ngoma and their subsequent attack on Masindi then, said then that he would start a farm in Ngoma in memory of the victorious at Masindi on February 20, 1984.
The farm now sits on a four square mile piece of land and has over 5,000 heads of cattle and other animals given to him by Ugandans as donations. The MPs were served fresh meat from the farm.
"When I got gifts from wanainchi, I refused to put them in my own farm. I used to put them at another farm in Ruhengyere and now this after negotiating and buying it from the owners. The idea of taking gifts is part of the corruption you are talking about. I put these cows here and I have been donating them. When I was in Otuke, I wanted to put there a farm like this then they said I wanted to steal their land," he said.
Among the donations over the years include those to the kabaka of Buganda of 200 heads of cattle, Tanzania 40, Otuke 90, the late Kaaya 200 heads of cattle North Ankole diocese, Kyankwanzi, etc. In the last six years over 1007 hundred heads of cattle have been given out totaling over 3000 donations from the farm over the years.
The president noted that the area in Ngoma has been influenced by what they did in Ankole by introducing cows and modern farms.
The eventful day started with inter-denominational prayers at Nali in Kyankwanzi before members were led on a five kilometre health walk by the President Museveni, from Kyankwanzi, to the farm after crossing river Mayanja by canoe.
The president later took the members of parliament to see the various cows and pointed out that the area has now woken up by introducing modern cows like the Frisian cows despite some challenges like animal nutrition which he pledged to address.
