Former deputy minister in charge of Higher Education in the first NRM Cabinet, John Ntimba, succumbed to cancer of the liver at Rubaga Hospital where he had been admitted for three weeks.
A source who tipped this newspaper about his death intimated that the deceased died of liver cancer.
Mr Polly Kiiza, the younger brother, confirmed the death, saying he passed away at 6am yesterday at Rubaga Hospital and his body was still at the hospital mortuary by press time awaiting for an official programme today.
“I am not authorised to speak on behalf of the family but he died Sunday, 6th July 2014 of old age and an ailment I need to confirm,” he said.
As the National Resistance Movement government celebrated 28 years in power in January this year, Ntimba was among the 48 ministers who featured in the Daily Monitor’s profile of the 1986 Cabinet which President Museveni appointed when he took over power.
The deceased had previously served as a senior civil servant before his appointment as deputy minister in charge of Higher Education.
After leaving Cabinet, he became chairman of the Makerere University appointments board and a member of the university’s council where he served for close to ten years.
He was also a member of the Kisubi Brothers governing council which is part of the Uganda Martyrs University.
