Martin Niemoller’s Poem

First they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionist and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me.

®The Rome statute refers to crimes against humanity as those odious deeds that constitute a repugnant attack on human dignity or grave humiliation or degradation of one or more human beings.

The Rome statute that establishes the ICC further views such crimes against humanity as those which are part either of a government policy or a wide practice of atrocities tolerated or condoned by a government or a de facto authority.

®Brutality on activists fit this bill.
