The late Hon Joseph Nsambu Musisi the person I knew:

I came to know Mr Nsambu Musisi when I joined St Mary’s College Kisubi 1966 at A Level. We joined Makerere University of East Africa about the same period, He studied Engineering while I embarked on Medicine.  We shared university Halls of residence and we lived on the same estate(Bush Hall) when we left University halls of residence. We parted when he left for Nairobi to pursue his career in Engneering.  I subsequently moved to UK to pursue my postgraduate education in General surgery.

When Mr Nsambu Musisi moved to UK in 1986 we found ourselves living in the same location in North West London. We were both committed to Baganda community activities in UK and Ireland. At the time Dr Sam Bengo (RIP) was the Kabaka’s representative for UK and Ireland.  Mr Nsambu Musisi based on his commonwealth experience introduced the idea of starting a credit union based on the idea borrowedfrom his place of work.

Twegatte Club similar to SACCO saving club was formed for a start while we pursued the registration of the credit union. The objectives were to mobilise funds from Baganda community in the UKto form a pool of money from which credit can be extended to members for their own benefit.

And, to assist in the development of Baganda community in the UK and Ireland by utilising their own financial resources effectively and to provide savings and investment opportunity for the betterment of Baganda community.

Application for the Credit union was turned down by ABCUL (Association of British Credit Union Limited) for lack of safe common bond among the Baganda community. We therefore persevered with Twegatte Club. When Dr Bengo’s tenure approached the end the hunt for his replacement went on. I was approached by the then Prime minister of the Kingdom of Buganda Hon Joseph Ssemwogerere Mulwanyamuli to nominate the most suitable candidate among the prospective candidates, I nominated Mr Joseph Nsambu Musisi. He was a man of great integrityapproachable trusted and discreet  He was very loyal to his master the King of Buganda and a devoted servant to the Baganda community.  Not surprisingly,he was deservedly appointed the Kabaka’s representative for UK and Northern Ireland.

was vindicated because he managed the task very well based on some of the memorable events, he staged such as Buganda 2000 and the welcome venue of her majesty Nabagereka the queen of Buganda just to mention a few. Organizing these events were expensive ventures usually ending up with financial short falls.  I noticed on several occasions Mr Nsambu Musisi voluntarily paying up such short falls out of his own pockect and quite often it could be a lot of money.

Twegattehis brainchild progressed to a membership approaching 135 and still recruitingA lot of members benefitted from Twegatte particulary at their time of need.  At the time many people were dying from AIDS and needed funds at short notice to repatriate their loved ones back to Uganda.  Members turned to Twegatte for relief. Twegatte became handysome people borrowed from Twegatte for a deposit to buy a house. Mr Nsambu Musisi was a guarantor and used his deposit in Twegatte to facilitate their application for such relief.

Over the years, Twegatte has grown and built up a modest capital base and should reach a critical mass someday to move to the next step. Twegatte is a legacy left by the late Hon Joseph Nsambu MusisiThe Baganda community in UK and Ireland have the obligation to take it forward to the next level with the young generation taking over its operations. Twegatte is managed by a board of directors, committee members and regulatory policies run on a voluntary basis.  Omubaka wa Kabaka will always be the chairman by default, currently Owekityibwa Hon Ronald Lutaaya is the chairman, supported by a secretary Dr Lawrence Kasujja  and the treasurer is Dr Joseph Maalo.

The deceased was a founding member of SMACOBA-UK and very supportive of the activities of the Old Boys network. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and colleagues. He is survived by his wife, Sarah; sons, Arnold and Kevin, and grandchildren.

MAY THE LORD GRANT HIM MERCY, AND REST HIS SOUL IN ETERNAL PEACE!

By Dr. Joseph Maalo MBCHB, FRCS(Ed)(FRCS(Eng), Treasurer Twegatte.
