THE CHURCH OF UGANDA SHOULD TAKE THE PAYMENT OF THE OUTSTANDING BALANCE ON CHURCH HOUSE VERY SERIOUS AND ENSURE IT IS PAID SOON.

According to the Archbishop Church of Uganda, His Grace Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, they have been paying a debt of Shs60bn and now remain with a balance of Shs16bn”.

While the Archbishop talks about Shs 16bn yet to be paid, this money keeps on accummulating due to interest that accrues to the loan. Ugandans may lose interest in this project completely. If Church of Uganda has land whose value can settle the outstanding balance, it is best that all effort is made to see the land sold off and the loan cleared.

The genesis of the Church House, which apparently is officially known as St. Janan Luwum Church House, can be traced to the provincial assembly of 1966 which resolved to establish Church of Uganda House Company Ltd to solicit funds to embark on a mega building project.

A project which was conceived 57 years ago, to have such a liability, it does not give hope to the Church community, that against the background of so many assets which the Church had to part with to realize the amount that Equity Bank needed to provide finance to its completion.

What the Archbishop and other leaders in Church of Uganda need to do is to get the problem to the President and clearly explain the delimma such that if is the Government buying the land, the matter is sorted once for all. That way, Christians will have hope. Otherwise, shs 16bn will easily grow to a bigger figure and the Church community may simply resign paying money into what looks to have been a bad project.
