WOOWE, WOOWE!

I wail for Uganda’s education system which is to produce so many illiterates at this time in the 21st Century.

By William Kituuka Kiwanuka

Being the retired man that I take myself to be, I find it hard that so many children are not going to school.

Many children of school going age are seen going to fetch water or playing at the time when they would be at school.

It is not surprising. The truth is: Many parents try to meet the basics to feed their families and just find themselves unable to meet school dues including: Uniform, scholastic materials, lunch to mention some.

The big question is: Can Uganda afford to have illiterates at this point in the 21st Century? Surely it should not, but unfortunately, that is what we are about to witness.

While it is true that the population in Uganda has grown so much during the NRM Governance, Government has in reality paid lip service to ensuring that the people are productive, hence generate income to be able to meet basic responsibilities.

Out there, many people have land that is capable of boosting the income of the families. Unfortunately, the families remain poor.

NRM spends a lot of money in politics of winning places at various levels but has failed to have effective personnel who can reach out to the people with innovations that can boost the incomes of families. These people need training in innovations that can work as well as monetary support to be able to undertake profitable agricultural enterprises.

How will NRM Government be judged in future if it remains in power for 50 years but has a large army of illiterates?

Time is ripe to see families have own generated incomes to ensure that they can support the children at school. Short of that, we shall have a huge army of the illiterates while some people keep amassing wealth and as poverty in most parts of the country.

Woowe, woowe: Uganda is a sad story as many of our children are denied chance to go to school which is a basic Human Right.
