WHAT NEXT AFTER MULAGO HOSPITAL SUCCESSFULLY SEPARATED CONJOINED TWINS?
For a number of years now, Ugandans have not had trust in the medical facilities and services locally, and for complex surgeries, many have often thought of looking for services outside Uganda. For many families which are not financially powerful, fundraising locally is the option.
The Question is: Given the expertise in Uganda, how can the handling of such complex surgical cases become the norm?
I think the private sector including the corporates need to organize support to help sustain this expert medical services. We have seen Rotary fundraising for Cancer and Blood banks. There is need to find a way in which those in this type of complicated surgeries can be supported and motivated so that majority of surgeries can be undertaken free of charge given that majority of the people are poor.
Mulago hospital successfully carried out a paediatric surgery on conjoined twins. The twins were transferred from Hoima referral hospital to Mulago hospital 2 days after birth.
The director of paediatric surgery at Mulago hospital Dr John Ssekabira says they shared the liver and skin that covers the heart which made the surgery possible.
