LATE DR. GEORGE WILLIAM MAYANJA BURIED

The Requiem Mass started at just after 9.00am on Tuesday, 3rd April 2012 at Christ the Kings Church. Bishop Paul Ssemwogerere was the main Celebrant. Doctor Mayanja who was born on November 11, 1950 breathed his last on March 31, 2012. The Bishop had praises for the fallen Old Boy of St. Mary’s College Kisubi, who always made it a point to first call at Christ the King Church before starting his routine at Victoria Medical Centre.
The first reading was got from Job. 19:23-27; the second reading was from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans. 8:14-23 and the Holy Gospel reading was from the Gospel according to John.12:24-26
What came out in nearly all the Speeches was the way the fallen Doctor loved the practice of Medicine and how he helped solve so many health problems of people of all walks of life; the Doctor was very enterprising, and that is behind the achievements he made in life; he loved his former school; St. Mary’s College Kisubi and played a very outstanding role in mobilizing Old Boys at a time when some had least concern about the Association, and he eventually got to the ranks of President of the same association; He by the time of death was a dedicated Vice Chairman of St. Mary’s College Kisubi Board of Governors as he had to represent Engineer J. B. Walusimbi (Jr) the Katikiiro of Buganda who is the Chairman of the Board. The Doctor’s dedicated service was self explanatory given the huge turn up at the Church for the Requiem Mass. Among those who are sorry about the death is the Kabaka of Buganda who expressed sadness at the passing away of the great Doctor who has been physician to many in the Buganda Royal ranks. The former Vice President Prof. Bukenya who happens to be an O. B of St. Mary’s College Kisubi was among the mourners. A cross section of business interests were represented at the mass. St. Mary’s College Kisubi Old Boy’s Association (SMACKOBA) made a contribution of shs5m to the burial arrangements; while St. Mary’s College Kisubi contributed shs 1m. The Cherubim Choir of SMACK was very much alive at the function.

There was worry that rain would disrupt the burial, fortunately, it was so short lived that the burial ceremony took off well after mourners were served with food. Reverend Father Mugabo the Parish Priest of Lweza Parish Church led the Mass to the burial of Dr. George Mayanja’s body at Seguku – Naziba Village. The impression the ceremony gave was that it was indeed a man who people valued that had passed on. Indeed it was a hero’s send off for Dr. Mayanja.

May the Almighty grant Dr. George William Mayanja’s soul eternal peace.
William Kituuka Kiwanuka
