IN MEMORY OF DR. SIMON KAGUGUBE

DR. SIMON KAGUGUBE 64 WAS CHARISMATIC, A REMARKABLE LEADER, VERY INTELLIGENT YET DOWN TO EARTH.

From the lens of the Old Boys of St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK), Dr. Simon Kagugube PhD was a leader whose skill was nurtured at SMACK where he was from 1970 - 1975 and House Prefect for Kiwanuka.

“When I was House Prefect, there was a near strike. That was a challenging moment at SMACK. As leaders, we had to balance the pressure of the students and administration. I was asked to write down the grievances of the students, which I did from Cubicle A for the bigger part of the night. I read the complaints to the students before handing them over to Brother Kyemwa who read them out to his teachers. I am very proud of that effort, “ Dr. Simon Kagugube.

As President of SMACKOBA, Kagugube was chair to the Finance Sub - Committee of SMACK 100 celebrations. He proposed a meet with the Governor Bank of Uganda which was okayed by the Steering Committee and, Prof Tumusiime Mutebile ended up contributing shs 15m to SMACK 100 and also accepted to be Chief Guest at the launch of the Centennial Magazine. And, because of his efforts, the Late Mulwana cleared the Steering Committee to use UMA Hall free of charge for the launch.

Dr. Kagugube loved his Alma mater. Asked by the Eagle in 2004 about the negative memories of SMACK, he said, “No negative memories for me, it was very good. I do not have any regret. I have been to America for 6 years, Yale ... all over, Kisubi is the best place I have lived in period”.

On Education at SMACK, “Education was fantastic, went to Makerere and was one of the best, excelled at Yale University for my Masters, went on for my PhD, I am able to fit anywhere because of such an education”.

As a team leader of the Old Boys, during the Re - Union of 2006, he played the lead role as President of SMACKOBA in inducing financial contributions by the Old Boys for SMACK 100. Indeed no other school in Uganda has ever challenged SMACK 100 level of organization and the numbers that turned up more so of the Old Boys.

In 2018 when Archbishop (Dr) Cyprian Kizito Lwanga visited SMACK to Bless the newly completed HSC Building, Dr. Kagugube talking on behalf of the Old Boys encouraged them to participate much more in all efforts to see the school to greater heights.

As one of the four Old Boys of SMACK, Dr. Kagugube played a very big role in getting Mapeera House a reality. Other OBs are: Prof. Ddumba Sentamu, Henry Kibirige and Architect Henry Sentoogo.

His intellect got him into various leadership roles including: Executive Director Centenary Bank, Board Chair URA, Board Chairman Monitor Publication Ltd and Board Member Nation Media Group. He was also President East African School of Taxation.

Dr. Simon Kagugube was a man of sound wisdom, a remarkable leader, charismatic, very intelligent, affluent, a loving parent yet down to earth who dearly loved his Alma mater.

We shall greatly miss him.
