From President Museveni’s address to Ugandans on the celebration of the 35th Anniversary of NRM/A, he clearly brought out the message that it was through struggle which was started as far back as 1966 that the country was eventually liberated by the NRM/A.
The message is clear that succession after him should have some salient considerations. The prospect candidates should possibly be vetted for specific qualifications for the country’s number one office.
I seem to buy the idea. The changes which saw that someone who is 18 years and above can compete for President do not make sense.
We are witnessing a situation where due to social media influence, anybody can now be favored for the top job.
Parliament removed the benefit of a new 4 Wheel drive car to each of the Presidential candidates simply because we do not have a vetting process. The process through among other things specific academic qualifications, experience working in Public Service at a Senior level and an actual televised interview should be among basic qualifications before one is endorsed a Presidential candidate.
It is very easy to ‘supply air’ to the electorate when a Presidential candidate talks of the ‘impossible’ to achieve during the 5 year term simply because he or she talks from an ignorant point of view in running state matters.
Uganda is one country that can easily get back to the turbulent times when people elect a person who just thinks that once in the big chair, things like security of the population will be automatic. I think we are not there yet however much we cherish democracy. Uganda in succession after Museveni may need someone who has practical ability in managing UPDF. Short of that, opportunists may High Jack the chance and cause instability.
